Starting point

Reduce desktop energy demand without compromising day-to-day use.

In 2013, a South Warwickshire NHS organisation needed to replace a mixed estate of ageing PCs. It wanted to reduce desktop energy demand, but the new systems still had to meet ordinary workplace requirements and be ready for practical deployment.

01

Efficiency without compromise

A lower power figure on a specification sheet was not enough. Any replacement computer still had to support the users, software and working environment it served. The team therefore had to distinguish genuine operational efficiency from a product choice that reduced energy consumption at the expense of usability, compatibility or lifespan.

02

Testing before specification

BNR compared manufacturers’ published power ratings with its own in-house testing, then used the findings to specify a custom ultra-compact PC. Approximately 300 systems were built, configured and supplied. This connected the energy objective to equipment that was practical for everyday work rather than choosing on power consumption alone.

03

Around 300 lower-energy PCs

Around 300 ageing PCs were replaced with custom-built ultra-compact systems. Based on manufacturers’ power ratings and BNR’s own testing, the new specification was expected to use approximately 75–90% less energy than a conventional desktop PC while remaining suitable for everyday workplace use.

Relevant BNR capability today

Connect sustainable IT choices to reliable workplace use.

BNR continues to evaluate workplace technology around the complete requirement rather than headline specification alone. Similar projects can combine energy use, compatibility, configuration, supply and lifecycle support in one equipment decision.
