Starting point

Move immigration checks closer to arriving passengers.

When a cruise vessel disembarked, large numbers of passengers could reach a confined port area at once. Barbados Immigration wanted officers to process people closer to the point of arrival, without giving up the central records and controls used at a fixed desk.

01

Beyond the fixed desk

A mobile process still had to give officers the information and controls available at a fixed desk. They needed to retrieve traveller records, check watch-list information and create the usual arrival or departure record. The device therefore had to extend the existing border workflow rather than operate as a separate system.

02

Taking immigration mobile

DPM Systems (Barbados) Ltd began deploying the mobile solution in 2018. Officers used Android smartphones and tablets to capture passport details and retrieve the relevant central record while working closer to arriving passengers. The mobile device was not a stand-alone database; it extended the established immigration process into locations where a permanent booth was impractical.

03

Faster processing at the port

Officers could carry out key checks away from the fixed desk while remaining connected to central traveller information. Barbados Immigration reported faster processing and less queue pressure at the port. The clearest evidence of sustained operational value is that the department continued ordering mobile devices for the project through 2023.
